Historically, Real Madrid and Barcelona have dominated the championship. Their yearly matches are among the most watched of the league. These two clubs have captured the League Championship 51 times (Real Madrid: 31 times, Barcelona: 20 times).
The league’s tournament format follows a double round-robin format, each club playing every other club twice during a league cycle, for a total of 38 games. Clubs earn 3 points per win, 1 point per draw, and no points for a loss. The team with the most points at the tournament’s end is awarded the championship. The top three teams in La Liga qualify directly for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
