The NFL season is upon us and it is time for a quick quiz. Who had the most passing yards in 2011? Who had the most passing touchdowns? Finally, who had the highest quarterback rating? That is correct. The answers are indeed Phillip Rivers, Tom Brady and Tom Brady. Deciding who the best quarterback is each year is not just about who finished first though. It is about which quarterback was able to produce game in and game out and put themselves near the top of those lists. Here some banter from around the NFL about some of the best quarterbacks in the league.
To say Tom Brady was great last season would be a misnomer. The Patriots quarterback led the league in rating and touchdown passes. In addition, Brady was also 8th in passing yards and 4th in completion percentage. This all sounds pretty awesome but one should also keep in mind that he also threw only four picks against those league leading 36 touchdowns. Anything close to a repeat of this season will make Brady a frontrunner among quarterbacks.
What happens when you take 33 passing touchdowns and 4,700 passing yards away from an NFL team? Indianapolis may soon find out. All-world QB Peyton Manning is dealing with a significant neck injury which has placed the beginning of his season in jeopardy. However, if and when he plays, expect Manning to be elite once again.
The defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers have a great quarterback too. Aaron Rodgers threw for 3,922 yards and 28 touchdowns. However, the biggest improvement for Rodgers came in his grittiness and ability to make the big play. It is possible that has he continues to develop these skills; Rodgers will improve upon last year’s numbers and take the Pack deep into the playoffs again.
Phillip Rivers, of the San Diego Chargers, led the NFL in passing yards last season. To go with those 4,710 yards, he also threw 30 touchdowns against only 13 interceptions. For many, last year was the first time that Rivers truly showed his full potential. It is easy to imagine higher numbers as the Chargers again play in a weak division and against an overall average schedule.
It seems like only yesterday that New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees was raising the Lombardi Trophy while celebrating a Super Bowl Championship. It was in fact, February of 2010. Last season, Brees was still solid with 4,620 passing yards and 33 touchdowns. However, his interceptions doubled to 22 from 2009 to 2010. If Brees can keep that number down once again and overcome the loss of super receiving back Reggie Bush, the QB should see his name back near the top of the list of NFL quarterbacks.
The next two quarterbacks enter this season with something to prove. Eagles QB Michael Vick electrified the sports world last season after a near four season hiatus. In 12 games, Vick threw for 3,018 yards and 21 touchdowns. With improvements on both sides of the ball, the Eagles are looking towards Vick to build on those numbers. On the other hand, Texans QB Matt Schaub is just looking to walk through the opening that the Manning injury has left. Schaub, who had 4,370 passing yards and 24 touchdowns last season hopes to improve on those numbers and finally lead the Texans to a division title and the playoffs.
