The Huskies take on #12 Baylor

The December 29th Valero Alamo Bowl which puts the twelfth ranked Baylor Bears up against the Washington Huskies is likely to be one of the more entertaining games of the bowl season. The game will start at 9:00 PM ET and will be televised on ESPN or ESPN 3. Baylor is looking to cap off a great season and prove they are one of the nation's top teams, while the Huskies look to post their first win this season against a ranked opponent.

The Baylor Bears are finishing one of the best seasons of the team's history. The Bears currently hold the number twelve ranking in the country and are highly ranked in all offensive categories. Senior quarterback Robert Griffin III leads the team's offense, having put together a season that has him in the running for the Heisman trophy. His numbers include a 72.4% completion percentage, 3998 passing yards, and a 36/6 touchdown to interception ratio. Along with his impressive throwing numbers Griffin III has rushed for 644 yards and 9 touchdowns, making 45 touchdowns credited to him on the year. Senior Kendall Wright tops the receivers of the Bears with 13 touchdowns and 1572 receiving yards. Senior running back Terrance Ganaway has also had an impressive year running the ball, with 1347 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. This offensive powerhouse of seniors has helped the team to become the sixth highest scoring team in the nation, averaging 43.5 points per game. While their offense has proven itself one of the nation's best, the defense has proven to be a glaring weakness of the team. The Bears are 109th in the nation with opponents scoring an average of 35.7 points against them. The performance of the defense could prove to be a large factor in how the team fares in their bowl game.

The Washington Huskies finished third in the PAC-12 south this year behind impressive Stanford and Oregon teams. Huskey fans saw their team finish the season in a difficult way, losing four of their last six games of the season. They come into the bowl game having won their last game against in-state rival Washington State and looking to prove that they can beat a ranked opponent. Washington has so far lost to all three ranked teams that it has faced this year by a significant margin. Their offense has proven themselves to be the stronger part of the team, having scored an average of 31.5 points per game. Sophomore quarterback Keith Price looks to be starting a solid career having thrown for 2625 yards and 29 touchdowns in his first season as the starter. Junior Chris Polk has led the rushing attack for the Huskies with 11 touchdowns and 1341 yards. The Huskey defense has definite room for improvement, finishing 99th in the nation with 33.3 points allowed per game. This will have to change in the bowl game if they are to post a bowl win for the PAC-12.

The game between the Huskies and the Bears is likely to be a high scoring offensive shoot-out with two solid offenses going up against two struggling defenses. Each team has something to prove coming into the game and will be looking to come away with a victory to finish the season off strong.

Guide To The Alamo Bowl

The Alamo Bowl is an annual college football bowl game that takes place in San Antonio, Texas. The name comes from the famous landmark located in the city. The game began in 1993 and is played in the Alamodome. The current sponsor of the Alamo Bowl is Valero Energy Corporation. Former sponsors for the game include MasterCard, Sylvania, and Builders Square.

The official name of the game is the Valero Alamo Bowl. The Alamo Bowl features several events leading up to the game. Beginning with the 2010 season, the game will pit a team from the Pac-10 Conference (now the Pac 12) against a team from the Big 12 Conference. The original conference tie-in for the Alamo Bowl was with the former Southwest Conference. After the Southwest Conference dissolved, the game pitted a Big Ten team against a Big 12 team through the 2009 season. Each team in the Alamo Bowl receives a $3 million payout, a good amount for a bowl game of its stature.

The game was played between Christmas and New Year's Eve every year until the most recent game took place on January 2nd, 2010. The Alamo Bowl has aired on ESPN since it began. It has given ESPN eight of the twenty best bowl game ratings on the network. The 2006 Alamo Bowl between Iowa and Texas was the highest rated bowl game in ESPN history.

The Alamo Bowl has seen steady attendance numbers over the years. In 2007, over 66,000 watched Penn State play Texas A&M, making it the highest attended Alamo Bowl game. The game has sold out six times, and has attracted over 50,000 fans every year since 1995. It is a major tourism event for San Antonio, generating millions of dollars in revenue for the city.

Iowa has appeared in the Alamo Bowl four times, the most of any other team. Nebraska has three wins in three appearances, the most of any participant. Nebraska also set the record for points in the Alamo Bowl when they put up 66 points against Northwestern in 2000. Last year's game saw Texas Tech score 41 points, making them the only other team to score at least 40 points in the game.

Thirteen games have featured at least one ranked team while five have featured two ranked teams. The highest rated team to play in the game was Kansas State, who was ranked fourth in 1998 when they lost to Purdue. Penn State, Purdue, and Iowa have also won multiple Alamo Bowls.
