With the first week of the 2011 FedEx Cup under way it will be interesting to see who ends up with the Cup after the 4 week mini season ends. Since the FedEx Cup started a few years ago there as been some of the best players in the world at or near the top. Woods has a few championships and Singh won in the year Tiger was hurt.
This season looks to be exciting as well, since Woods is fighting to stay in contention and guys like Stricker, Mickelson, and Dustin Johnson are near the top of the standings.
The format has changed over the few years of the event and now if you are in the top 5 going into the Tour Championship and win that event, you are the FedEx Cup winner. In the past the tournament had been locked up going into the last event taking much of the excitement out of it.
During the 4 weeks, the number of players in each event gets cut each week. Starting at 125 players at the Barclay's, it goes down to 100 then 75 and finally 30 players for the Tour Championship. The last two events do not have cuts either so that gives guys a chance to make a big weekend charge.
Guys are really just trying to jockey for position now and get into that top 5. In a rare event, Jim Fuyrk was disqualified from the event for missing the Pro-am by 5 minutes. He overslept but the rules state if you miss it you cannot play in the event. That was a huge blow since he was in the top 5 going into the week.
No matter what it will be an exciting finish to the PGA Tour 2011 season.
